Spotlight on emerging farming talentRecent winners reflect a shift towards more data-driven and management-focused farming approaches. In 2025, Creighton dairy farmer Dale Hutton was recognised for integrating technology and resource efficiency into his operation. The 2024 title went to Mooi River Beefmaster cattle and maize farmer Guy English, whose approach emphasises biosecurity, soil health and herd improvement. In 2023, Lüneberg farmer Heiko Gevers was acknowledged for his structured management style and focus on business discipline and community upliftment. Together, these examples point to a broader trend in agriculture, where long-term viability is increasingly linked to planning, adaptability and operational efficiency. Focus on management, not scaleThe competition is open to Kwanalu members under the age of 40, across all commodities and farming systems. Participants are assessed on their overall management approach, including financial oversight, labour management and marketing, rather than purely on production output. Organisers emphasise that success in modern agriculture is less about the size of an operation and more about how effectively it is run. Entrants must demonstrate active decision-making responsibility within their businesses, whether operating independently or as part of a partnership. “The competition continues to reveal the depth of talent, resilience and forward-thinking within our province. It’s not only about recognising excellence, but about ensuring that the future of agriculture in KwaZulu-Natal remains strong, sustainable and led by capable hands,” said Kwanalu CEO, Sandy La Marque. Pathway to national competitionThe provincial winner will represent KwaZulu-Natal at the Toyota SA/Agri SA National Young Farmer of the Year competition, competing for national recognition and the overall prize. KwaZulu-Natal remains one of South Africa’s most diverse agricultural regions, producing a wide range of products for local and export markets, with young farmers playing an increasingly important role in sustaining that output. Entries close on 31 July 2026. |
