South Africa is stepping forward when the world hesitatesIt has been just over a week since LIV Golf South Africa finished at Steyn City and that electrifying feeling has not left me. The energy, the cheers, the moments that lifted us all higher. And yet the conversation has not slowed down. If anything, it has gained momentum. Across news, politics, investment, sports and tourism, every reflection and sentiment carries the same message. These reflections have carried a consistent thread, and that has been one of definite confidence in South Africa. This is not manufactured optimism, but real belief that something is alive and working here, right now, and that feeling has stayed with me. The message? We did not only host an event, but we delivered a special moment people will carry with them forever. ![]() In hospitality we are trained to notice everything. The pause in a guest's voice, the glimmer in someone's eye when you give more than expected, the hum of satisfaction long after an event ends. That is exactly what I have noticed this past week. Amid global uncertainty South Africa is stepping forward showing the world that resilience is not just an idea, but it is what we do. Carrying that feeling into the futureTravel is fragile right now. Routes have been disrupted, plans and major events require changes, and a plan B or even plan C. Corporate and leisure travellers are reassessing where and how they move. And through it all, we stand positive. Resilience is not born in comfort. It is forged in challenges, and life here is complex with daily struggles, social and economic pressures, and security worries. But we stand strong, we rise and we hold steady. A spirit tested and provenIn 1995 during profound political change we hosted the Rugby World Cup. It was not just a tournament, but it was a statement of courage, unity and confidence. Winning it proved we could hold our nerve, welcome the world and redefine ourselves and our history. That instinct returned many more times, in different years, different trials, but with the same courage. As a nation, built on resilience, we perform under pressure and we rise together. Within travelling and hospitality, this spirit carried us through the Covid-19 pandemic. When local borders opened, and hospitality faced its darkest hours, it was domestic travel kept us alive. Teams and businesses pivoted, and adapted and our people stepped up proving that success is not avoiding pressure, but standing in it together. Even when it is not perfect. That lesson is what travel must remember today. South Africa is not a stopover, or Plan BWe pivot, we adapt, and boy, do we excel! Our foodie scene draws the global curious and very particular. Our service is exceptional at every coffee shop, bistro and five-star restaurant. We deliver moments that resonate even when societal conditions are far from simple. This resilience has been earned through history, experience and many challenges. We thrive to give guests more than a checklist. And through this our timing to excel matters. Our business centres, world class events and leisure experiences all converge to create fewer trips with greater impact. Our position as a destination becomes stronger than ever! And the numbers show it. Tourism at an all-time highIn 2025 South Africa welcomed a record 10,48 million international visitors the highest ever. Early 2026 momentum continues. Cape Town International Airport handled over 367,000 international passengers in January alone up nearly 9% year on year. The world may pause but our grit keeps moving. What we showed at LIV Golf, is an energy, you cannot find anywhere elseAs I reflect on what Bryson DeChambeau (or “Braaison” as he will henceforth be affectionately known in South Africa) and Paul Casey said about the crowds, the organisation, and the welcome at LIV Golf, it was not hollow praise, but it was a genuine excitement and a glimmer in their eyes of getting way more than they ever expected. Said DeChambeau, “South Africa was unbelievable, it has to be the best LIV Golf event we have ever had.” And Casey, “This is important for me. This has got a special place in my heart. To see this scene today… actually just all week, the Southern Guards were amazing, Louis and those guys said, this is what we’re going to do, and then they followed through, and thanks to everybody, the government and the country and the fans to make this what it was.” They clearly, most definitely left changed, as this experience wasn’t just about making memories, but changing perspectives. Spectators cheered for teams under pressure regardless of nationality they were all adopted as South Africans. That steadiness, humour and optimism is rare. It stays with visitors long after they leave. They leave with memories, yes, but also a new perspective. It was recognition and capability of a country with maximum “gees” that knows how to host, how to manage complexity, and how to make people feel welcome. South Africa has shown up ready. We are the destinationDon’t get me wrong. South Africa's story is not about ignoring our challenges. But it’s about facing them honestly and moving forward. We are hosting major events, adjusting to global travel uncertainty, whilst staying relevant across leisure, business and conferencing. Over the past week voices across the sector have reflected one truth. This is not a fleeting moment. What gives me the deepest pride is seeing how we show up for one another. How we support every visitor, every traveller, every event in whatever way we can. Teams on the ground, with communities welcoming guests. All with commitment and unmistakable joy. South Africa may not always have a smooth path. But we rise. Anyone travelling here, for business, leisure or discovery, feels it the moment they arrive, and it leaves a positive mark. This makes us more than a destination. It makes us THE destination. A country that delivers, inspires, and stays with you long after you leave, despite our challenges.
